Meet Polina Dobrotina | ARTDOBRO. An artist who successfully renders mood and emotion through her uses of colour and dramatic brush strokes. Her large paintings caught our eye when she submitted her work to our LIFTED\\18 Art Competition for emerging artists. Here's what she had to say:
[DYD] What was your biggest inspiration when creating the pieces that we featured for this show?
It’s hard to say. Each piece has its own personality, character and life. They are all inspired by different phenomenon such as Death, Freedom and Pureness of Nature.
“The Red Feast” carries the positive side of Death. It has a long story behind, but in the nutshell it’s telling people that Death is a logical continuation of our lives which shouldn’t scare those who are still alive. We all want people we’ve lost to be in the bright and colourful place.
“The Sky” transports you to the place that doesn’t have any boundaries what so ever. It brings you to the condition where you fell nothing but Freedom.
“Cold Water” has a strong personality of Pure Nature. It came to me in a dream – I could clearly see the effect of vibrant light and feel its powerful energy. Sometimes I feel like I am executing someone’s ideas which happen to be inside my head. Thrilling.
[DYD] Do you work from home or in a studio? How does this inform your art process?
I work from my studio in my house It’s a small conservatory lit by daylight through the glass roof which creates great atmosphere for painting. It is a very special place - my cave, where I am free to do whatever I want.
[DYD] How do you decide on your colour palettes?
Creative perception of my life helps me to decide on the palettes. In my mind everything has its own colour: a touch, a feeling, an emotion or music. It’s just the brightness that changes.
[DYD] What, or who inspires you to become a better artist?
It is hard to say as there are many things that inspire me.
I started to show the interest in Art long time ago when I was a child. My favourite painting was “Le Pont” by Claude Monet. I could spend hours imagining myself walking in this beautiful garden.
Years later I moved to Normandy - the birth-place of impressionism where the most inspiring and spiritually powerful artists lived such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Alfred Sisley and many more. Their paintings and personalities inspired me to continue their practice and bring the idea of “impression” to the modern world. I strongly believe that I should at least try to connect the spirit of impressionism with contemporary art.
[DYD] How has your practice change over time?
Practice makes perfect - Confidence appears with the time. The more I paint, the braver I am.
I frequently experiment with painting techniques, bringing back traditional watercolours, charcoal, pastel and other mediums from time to time. Things I learn through this practice help me to grow as an artist.
